Assignment #1: Reflections

Dear Mdm Fazilah and classmates

Subject: Self-Introduction

My name is Chong Jin Ee Adam and I am a student in the Critical Thinking and Communicating module for class S19.

I graduated with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Business Management from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the year of 2019. I have taken a liking to Mechanical Engineering during my polytechnic studies as I came to understand and believe that Mechanical Engineering is one of the core disciplines of engineering and is applied in every aspect of modern life to help design ergonomically better products for a better quality of life.

I believe that a communication strength I possess is the ability to concisely convey concepts and ideas to an audience. In contrast to this, one of my weaknesses is the inability to captivate the audience well. An example of these two points would be while I was presenting my Final Year Project during my polytechnic studies, the feedback I had received from my lecturers and peers was that they understood the content well but the delivery of the content was dull and mundane. I had come to realize the importance of implementing good strategies for presentation instead of focusing on just content in order to achieve effective communication.

With the contents of the module, I intend to understand communication techniques and integrate them into my work. Secondly, I would like to build upon my confidence with regards to public speaking and presenting. I believe achieving these goals would help to create a more engaging and beneficial experience while maintaining the ability to relay information productively.

To conclude, I will have to practice more self-awareness and restraint with my desire to complete work quickly in order to not compromise the quality of presentation. I believe that this trait of mine helps me to stand out within the class but could also be the reason for my downfall during assignments and submissions.

I look forward to self-improvement through subsequent seminars with the class.
